Get Covered for Life: Nursing Care in Federal Way

In 2011, we were approached by a family whose senior was diagnosed with dementia and recently suffered a stroke. He needed speech therapy and a strong recovery plan from a skilled nursing facility. Needless to say though, he would need a long-term care community; a place that could provide rehabilitative care, memory care, and eventually hospice care.

We needed to find a facility that could provide all three because when an elder is that fragile, they cannot afford to move more than once. We didn’t anticipate that the senior would pass away (he hasn’t!), but hospice is something they needed to plan for.

Move for Care Needs, Not Financial

With the Concierge Care Advisors, one of the things we pride ourselves on is the ability to get seniors quality care for the rest of their life – regardless of income.

We only want elders to make the move once because the stress of moving can be extremely detrimental to the elder’s health.

It’s in the fine print with many senior living communities that elders have a right to remain in their care, so long as they are qualified to provide that nursing care – although it may be worded in more industry vernacular.

This basically means two things:

  1. So long as the staff are qualified, the elder can remain at the facility (this is a given as you wouldn’t hire people that are inexperienced).
  2. As long as the elders do not require more nursing care than the staff are able to provide.

It’s this second one that can come as a nasty surprise for elders. They may have the financial means to live at the community, but if they’re suddenly diagnosed with dementia at an assisted living – with no memory care – then, they need to move.

This is why it’s necessary to pick a senior housing community that fits your elder’s long-term plan.

The worst case scenario would be an elder that can afford their current senior housing community, but then is forced to move to another that is beyond their means of income.

So, one of the things we do is find the community that an elder can remain at (potentially forever). Then, in the contract, we make sure that the elder cannot be moved due to financial reasons – only care needs. So you do the math! If their care needs are provided for, for life, then even if they cannot afford it beyond a number of years, they cannot be forced to move!

Nursing Care in Federal Way

To wrap up that story of the elder we were working with, we toured several skilled nursing care facilities that could provide a comprehensive rehabilitative plan along with long-term care needs. The senior and his family decided on a nursing care center in Federal Way that also offered the maximum amount of independence in a private (versus a shared) room.

Always plan for long-term care needs, not just what fits at the time.
